Saxe Gotha PC of Lexington, SC volunteer their time for Thornwell

July 16, 2008

Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, Lexington, SC youth included Thornwell in their recent MAD (Make A Difference) mission project. The youth spent the morning mulching around buildings on campus and did a terrific job! After having lunch, they took tours of cottages and wrapped up the day with swimming at the Thornwell pool. On Thursday, May 22nd, Thornwell held its

4th Annual Family Teacher Appreciation Day

The theme this year was A Luau by the Lake, complete with beautiful flowerTiki_Bar leis, tropical fruit drinks from the Tiki Bar (non-alcoholic, of course) a tasty bar-b-que buffet and lots of gifts and awards. All Family Teachers were honored for their service to the children and youth of Thornwell and presented with the annual celebration T-shirt.

lau_1At the sound of a bongo beat, Family Teacher’s names were drawn from a hat and winners received a gift card from various stores and restaurants. Gift cards from T.G.I. Friday’s, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks and many, many more were given as gifts of appreciation.

Jim_and_Becky_BrownCongratulations to Jim and Becky Brown for receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award for obtaining professional certification in the Teaching Family Model for five consecutive evaluations, and the Practitioner of the Year Award for their exceptional service to Thornwell.

At the end of the day, all honored guest participated in a limbo competition – much fun was had by all.
Many thanks to all our Family Teachers for their dedicated commitment to our children!

Thornwell Youth Award Farrell Fund Grants

Farrell Fund_1This spring, the children and youth of Hartness-Thornwell Memorial Church had the opportunity to learn firsthand about stewardship, philanthropy, and the spirit of volunteerism, thanks to an endowment established for Thornwell youth called The Farrell Philanthropic Fund. Each year, the children choose a local, a national, and an international charity to be the beneficiary of a Farrell Fund gift. The three organizations chosen to receive grants this year were The United Way of Laurens County ($1500) Relay for Life ($1500) and Heifer International ($1000) for the purchase of 2 llamas, 1 heifer and 10 flocks of chickens.

Family Teacher Ann Felten is Awarded 2008 Lay Person of the Year

Ann_FeltenThornwell Family Teacher, Ann Felten, was recognized as the 2008 Lay Person of the year by the Association of Smaller Congregations of the Presbyterian Synod of South Atlantic, during their May, 2008 conference. Ann’s example of Christian service and discipleship within her local church and community, and to global mission projects is extraordinary. We are thankful for Ann’s faithful commitment to the children of Thornwell; and we congratulate her on winning this distinguished award. Thornwell Welcomes the Board of Visitors

board_visitOn April 24-25, Thornwell welcomed a group of nearly 40 wonderful men and women who for the past year, have been champions for Thornwell's Children and the great work that is accomplished through this ministry.
The Thornwell Home for Children's Board of Visitors traveled from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina to spend two days on campus, touring cottages, spending time with the children and learning all about Thornwell's programs. To see more photos of their visit, click here.

Board of Visitors Presents Two Awards

2008 Distinguished Service Award. Both awards were presented by Thornwell's Board of Visitors Chairman, Harris Murray, during a dinner presentation on April 24th.

Family Teacher, Gwen Warner, Retires After 23 Years of Service

GwenretiresOn March 13, 2008, Thornwell's Board of Directors recognized Mrs. Gwen Warner for her years of service as a house parent and Family Teacher at Thornwell. Gwen and her husband, Russell, have devoted much of their adult lives to the care of children in need. Over the years, hundreds of children have been touched by the love and kindness of these two very special people. Thank you, Gwen and Russell, for your dedicated service to nurturing God's children.

Thornwell Family Teachers run the 10K in Greenville

March 2, 2008

10KOn March 1, 2008, Family Teachers, Leah Hucks and Cynthia Detweiler, participated in the 31st Annual Reedy River Run, a 10K race through downtown Greenville, SC. Their finishing time: 57:30. Way to go Leah and Cynthia!
