Kingston’s Journey Towards Healing
Exhausted father, Josiah was at a loss for what the next step would be for his seven-year-old adopted son and family.
His adopted son Kingston had been suspended from school twice within that school year. Despite being in trouble, Kingston showed no concern over his plummeting grades and school record. At home, he constantly fought with his siblings and ignored his parents. Not only was Kingston’s safety becoming a concern but his overall well-being. Josiah and his wife Mary adored all of their children and knew Kingston needed extra time and attention. After discovering Thornwell’s Building Families program, Josiah knew this was where his family was being led.
Josiah knew a change needed to happen.
Thornwell’s Building Families program worked with Kingston and his family. They focused on rebuilding relationships within their home and communicating more efficiently. At first, his parents were hesitant to try a more strengths-based approach to their parenting. Over time, Josiah and Mary became more playful and responsive toward Kingston rather than reactive to all the ways he would break rules.
With so much progress and the skills they have acquired, Josiah has now shared his hope for his family. In aftercare, Josiah and Mary reported the vacations they were planning and the church activities in which Kingston has been involved. Kingston is excited about his very first beach trip and will finally experience a family vacation.
Josiah stated, “I don’t know why it’s clicking for him now, but it is!”
