At only 9 years old, Max hated going to school. He would often cry and beg his foster mom, Hannah, not to make him go. He feared being called on in class because he could rarely answer his teacher’s questions correctly. Hannah championed Max as he worked so hard to heal from years of trauma, but his confidence was still so low. The school even notified Hannah he would likely not be able to advance to the next grade level. Max was embarrassed and felt like a failure.

But Hannah wouldn’t let him give up on himself. And you didn’t either!

Because of your generous support for Thornwell, Max had access to resources that supported his educational goals. Their Thornwell Foster Care Family Specialist connected Hannah and Max to Read Right, Thornwell’s reading empowerment program.

Max met with his tutor weekly. Initially, he wasn’t sure about going to tutoring since no one else in the home needed extra help. However, it didn’t take long to see a positive change in Max! Soon, he couldn’t wait to go to school and show his teachers all he could read – and it’s thanks to YOU!

Max is finding continued academic support today because you believe every child deserves to feel confident and well-supported. Max loves attending his Read Right tutoring and spending time reading new books. Max has even gained a whole grade level in reading- increasing his confidence in himself!
