From “Troublemaker” to Triumph: Gus’s Journey at LushAcres Farm

Looking back, 21-year-old Erik – better known as “Gus” – can hardly believe how far he’s come. When he came to Thornwell six years ago, he was a 15-year-old who never quite found the stability or guidance he needed growing up. Gus was labeled a troublemaker.

Fortunately, the generosity of our donors paved the way for Gus to discover a love for farming and a newfound passion for the cows at LushAcres Farm.

“The cows know who you are and have different personalities. They have expectations of you, and you have expectations of them,” explains Gus.

As his passion grew, so did his responsibilities under the mentorship of experienced livestock Manager, Morgan Undari.

“I’ve learned a lot from her about the general basis of just… everything,” he explains.

As Gus shadowed Morgan, he began to see the farm through her eyes. The cows weren’t just animals anymore; they were complex creatures with unique needs and personalities. He learned to read the subtle signs of a cow’s health, to understand their behaviors, and to anticipate their needs. It wasn’t just about feeding and cleaning anymore. He truly cared for these animals.

Today, Gus stands tall as a young man with purpose and direction while working at LushAcres Farm. He’s also sporting a new title that he’s proud to have earned.

“[LushAcres] just recently added me to their website,” he says with a huge smile. “It says’ Assistant Livestock Manager.’”

This title isn’t just a few words on a website. For Gus, it’s a testament to his dedication, growth, and the trust the farm placed in him.

“I’ve put a great deal of time and effort into those animals,” Gus explains. “It made me feel really good about myself.”

Because Thornwell’s community cares about the future of young men like Gus, he found more than just a job at LushAcres Farm. He found a purpose, a mentor, and a herd of his own. As he continues to work and grow, he carries with him the knowledge that he, too, can make a difference – one cow, one day, one moment at a time.
