Stepping Up to The Plate: Victoria and Miles’ Story

On any given evening, you’ll probably find Thornwell foster mom, Vicki, in the bleachers of a ball field. She beams with pride as she watches her boys practice a game they love. She celebrates each moment because she knows the joy of playing (and winning) was hard-fought for *Miles.

Miles had always wanted to play on a baseball team like his friends, but the family budget and circumstances never allowed him to join. When he entered foster care at age 11, he gave up his dream of being a “typical” kid. When he joined Vicki and her son Christian in their Thornwell foster home, he finally had the chance to dream.

Because Thornwell believes that all children deserve a safe, loving, stable home where they can thrive, Vicki has all the encouragement, resources, and support she needs to champion Miles’ dreams.

Vicki’s car is always filled with baseball gear, and the laundry basket is full of sweaty athletic clothes, but it’s all worth it! After much hard work, Miles’ team won their championship game at the end of last season.

The trophy was a treat, but Miles’ real victory was looking up into the stands to see Vickiand Christian cheering him on.

Vicki says, “I have the deepest gratitude for the support and resources provided by Tracy [Foster Care Family Specialist] and Thornwell throughout my journey as a foster parent. It allows me to provide a loving and supportive environment for the children in my care. One child at a time, I’m doing my part.”

We are thankful for a community of generous support, which makes big dreams possible! By caring to give, you tell Miles that he is worthy of those big dreams—and so much more.

*Miles’ name has been changed to protect his identity.
