Thornwell Child Development Center Earns NAEYC Recognition

Thornwell Child Development Center has earned Recognized status from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), marking an important step in the program’s pursuit of full NAEYC Accreditation.

NAEYC Recognition demonstrates a program’s commitment to the foundational elements of quality early learning. Recognized programs align their environments, policies, and practices with NAEYC’s early learning standards while committing to continued growth and improvement.

“This milestone reflects the care, intentionality, and pursuit of excellence our Child Development Center team brings to its work each day,” said Rev. Myron Wilkins, President and CEO of Thornwell. “We are proud of their dedication to creating an environment where young children are known, nurtured, and equipped with a strong foundation for learning and life.”

The Recognition application process began in May, and Thornwell submitted its completed application on July 1. The Center’s existing structure and daily operations required few changes because many of NAEYC’s foundational quality practices were already in place. The application process largely focused on updating and adding policies to formally document those practices and meet NAEYC’s required criteria.

To earn Recognition, Thornwell Child Development Center successfully completed NAEYC’s application and assessment process, meeting all required criteria. The distinction applies to the Center’s infant, toddler, and preschool programming.

Thornwell Child Development Center now joins the Recognized and Accredited early learning programs included in NAEYC’s South Carolina directory and is the only listed program located in Laurens County.

“This achievement belongs to our entire Child Development Center team,” said Norman Dover, Vice President for Educational Services. “Their commitment to our children, families, and one another is evident in the thoughtful work they do every day. We are excited to celebrate this progress while continuing the journey toward Accreditation.”

Recognition is the first step in NAEYC’s quality journey and makes Thornwell Child Development Center eligible to pursue full Accreditation. Accreditation represents a more extensive demonstration of quality practices and is recognized nationally as a standard of excellence in early childhood education.
