Unbreakable Bonds. Unwavering Love: Leslie’s Story

When Rebecca and Jason Honeycutt welcomed their foster daughter, *Leslie, into their home, they were met with the harsh reality of childhood trauma and its brutal impacts. Despite their desire to make their home a sanctuary for her – a safe place where she could grow and heal – one conversation shook them hard. They asked Leslie to “describe herself.”

“I’m bad, and everybody hates me,” Leslie said with a detached, thousand-yard stare. “I should just get locked up forever and ever. I don’t deserve to eat.”

Leslie’s emotional wounds were deep, often requiring medical intervention to calm her, and the Honeycutts found themselves at a loss for ways to form healthy attachments. Still, they refused to give up on her and were determined to find help and hope.

Because you believe ALL children deserve the chance to know and understand peace, love, and security, the Honeycutts were led to Thornwell’s Strengthening Families program.

Soon, the whole family, including their biological children, embarked on the 14-week journey toward healing, healthy attachments, and stronger bonds!

Through this process of growth and learning, they realized that being godparents isn’t about having all the answers or being perfect; it’s about unconditional love and unwavering support. Together, they learned new communication skills and explored innovative ways to connect with their children emotionally.

This built a stronger relationship with their biological children, and they all learned ways to help Leslie take steps toward healing. Their compassion became an anchor for Leslie’s fragile heart.

“All the skills we learned helped us communicate better and set expectations, rewards, and consequences. To such a degree that not only has Leslie’s life been changed forever, but so has everyone in our household, “explained Jason.

Your profound generosity and support have helped the Honeycutts– and Lesile – flourish through communication and empathy! Their journey is far from easy or over, but your unwavering love for families like the Honeycutts provides a foundation for healing and growth.

Today, they prioritize quality time with each child, engaging in activities that bring them joy and fostering a sense of belonging within the family unit. Through their patience and understanding, they’ve witnessed a transformation in their children and themselves.
