While Most Kids Fear the Dark, Lucy Fears Everyday Life
Most kids are afraid of one thing or another. Scared of the dark or monsters under the bed. Lucy is afraid of everyday life.
Lucy (9) arrived at the home of her Thornwell foster parents scared, exhausted, and way behind in school.
It hadn’t always been that way.
School had been a safe space for Lucy. There she would have food to eat, friends to play with, and teachers to look out for her. It’s where she could escape her troubling home life. But, one day, she stopped attending school altogether. Her family moved her from city to city and bed to bed. Her sense of safety slipped away.
By the time she entered foster care, she hadn’t seen a classroom in months. She feels hopeless…like she’ll never catch up. She needs someone to say, “I’m here to help.”
As we look toward a new school year, our foster homes are eager to give Lucy and other kids just like her the opportunity to succeed. Together, we can help ensure that children participating in Thornwell programs have everything they need to be school-ready.
When our community steps in, Lucy’s dreams of becoming a teacher are closer to coming true and help her to believe in herself so that she can inspire a whole new generation of students to do the same. Ripple effects of positive life change happen every day! Through Thornwell, Lucy and kids like her can have literacy skill-building and personalized tutoring.
When kids in foster care have compassionate support from our community, they don’t have to continually worry if they’re safe or if there will be enough food on the table. They have the tools they need to learn and grow.
Together, we can give children the opportunities they need to flourish!
Lucy and kids like her don’t have to watch their hopes and dreams slip away along with their grades. YOU can help children succeed. Join me today in being a joyful giver!
